This Souvenir Card commemorates the inaugural event that took place on April 26, 2004 with the opening of the Tour and Visitor Center at the Western Currency Facility (WCF). The opening of the Tour and Visitor Center marks the first time in United States history that the public will have the opportunity to view the production of paper currency west of the Mississippi River.

In the 1980s, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing determined that an additional facility was needed to increase the Bureau’s production capacity. The Bureau requested and received approval from the Department of the Treasury to conduct a competitive solicitation for proposals from localities for the donations of the land and shell of the facility. The bidding process was restricted to localities west of the Mississippi River since it was determined that the WCF would be used to supply currency to the western Federal Reserve Districts of Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco. In November 1986, it was decided that the City of Fort Worth, Texas proposal of land and shell of the facility was the most advantageous to the Bureau. Included within the shell were the Federal Reserve Vault, production floor, and support areas. The official opening ceremony took place on April 26, 1991. Thirteen years later, the WCF officially opened its Tour and Visitor Center to the public.

This intaglio print card features the WCF both as it was in 1991 and as it appears currently.
