First Day of Sale:  August 9, 2016 (8:00 a.m. ET) - The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is pleased to introduce its 2016 Intaglio Print Program, Independence Collection.   This year’s program focuses on the Declaration of Independence.  This print, “Pursuit of Happiness,” the third and final card in this series, shows an allegory of “The Flag.” The allegory is holding a flag and an olive branch. The flag represents the 50 states of the United States of America and the olive branch symbolizes peace. The torch placed below the allegory is symbolic of knowledge and enlightening people. The images of the allegory with a flag and torch, all represent the ability to achieve happiness through peace and enlightenment in the land of opportunity.

Description of Images: 

Center - Miscellaneous Die #8890:  “The Flag” which was engraved by Louis S. Schofield in 1916 and used for the face of coupons for the Second Liberty Loan of 1917.

Background – Miscellaneous Plate #218107-3 “Declaration of Independence”

Seal – Offset embossed
