(First day of sale:  April 14, 2014 - 8:00 AM ET – Price: $22.50) – The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is pleased to introduce “Navy,” the second of five cards in the 2014 “Defenders of Freedom” Intaglio Print Program.  This program is dedicated to the five branches of the United States Armed Forces representing Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

The “Navy” print features an exquisite compilation of unique engraved vignettes focusing on the age-old art of intaglio printing.

Description of Images:

• Top Center:  Vignette (Sailor) Miscellaneous Die #17627
Engraved by Joseph S. Creamer, Jr., 1966.  From photograph furnished by the DefenseDepartment.  Offset version used on $5 Military Payment Certificate, Series 681.

• Top Center:  Vignette (Submarine) Miscellaneous Die #17626
Engraved by Edward R. Felver, 1966.  From photograph furnished by the Defense Department.  Used on “Significant Events of the 20th Century” souvenir cards, BEP Gift Shop.

• Center:  Emblem (United States Navy).  Embossed gold foil.

• Bottom Center:  $20 Military Payment Certificate, Series 691
Main vignette— Miscellaneous Die #908: “‘America’ Head.”  Engraved by Alfred Sealey, 1869.
Used for Export Tobacco Stamp, 1872, and a Plate Printers’ Ball ticket.

• Border:  Miscellaneous Plate #217264-3
